Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication: The Beverly Hills Owner’s Guide

If the weld on your Mighty Mule gate bracket, hinge, or post has cracked or torn loose, we stock the steel and the equipment to fix it right, usually same-day in Beverly Hills. Most Mighty Mule welding and fabrication repairs run between $180 and $450 installed, depending on whether we’re re-welding a bracket in place, fabricating a replacement mount, or rebuilding a hinge post. You’ll know it failed when the gate starts sagging toward the latch side, the opener strains or jerks, or you see a visible crack running through the metal where the arm meets the gate.

We see this most often on single-swing gates where a Mighty Mule MM362 or MM571 opener has been working against a weld that was never quite right from the start. A gate that weighs 400 pounds puts constant stress on that connection point. When the weld goes, the opener keeps pushing, and things start bending that shouldn’t bend. Hal Gatewood has been fixing exactly this in Beverly Hills since 2001, and he’ll tell you the same thing every time: fix the metal first, then the opener. Fix it backwards and you’ll be back here in six months.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

We fabricate and weld for every Mighty Mule single and dual swing gate opener we’ve seen in Beverly Hills, including the MM260, MM360, MM362, MM371, MM372, MM571, MM572, and the newer M series like the MMKits. The welding and fabrication side almost always involves the gate itself rather than the opener, and that’s where compatibility questions get real. The opener’s post bracket bolts onto steel or wood, but the gate leaf, the hinge posts, and any custom mounting plates are what actually take the load.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know until it’s too late: Mighty Mule post bracket kits assume a certain post thickness and a flat mounting surface. Beverly Hills has plenty of older homes with round steel posts, stone columns, or stucco-finished posts that don’t fit the bolt-on bracket profile. That’s where custom fabrication comes in. We build mounting plates and saddle brackets from 1/4-inch steel so the opener arm sits square to the gate instead of fighting it. If you’re ordering parts yourself, check the label on the control board inside the opener housing. The model number is printed right there. For the gate side, measure the post diameter and the gate frame thickness before you buy anything. A bracket built for a 2-inch post won’t clamp a 4-inch post, and no amount of shimming makes it safe.

One more thing on OEM versus aftermarket. Mighty Mule’s OEM brackets are fine for light gates in good condition. But if your gate has a crack near the weld or a hinge that’s been wearing for years, replacing the bracket with another stamped OEM piece doesn’t solve the underlying problem. We fabricate heavier-duty replacements when the gate calls for it, and we’ll show you the difference in thickness before we install anything. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Ghost Controls, and DoorKing systems, so if you’ve got a mixed setup, we can usually match it the same visit.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate sags noticeably at the latch end. This means a hinge weld or the hinge post itself has started to flex. The gate didn’t get heavier; the connection point got weaker. Beverly Hills gates on sloped driveways are especially prone to this because gravity never stops working.
  • You hear a clunk or creak when the opener starts moving the gate. That sound is metal moving against metal at a joint that should be solid. Sometimes it’s a loose bolt. More often it’s a weld that’s cracked but hasn’t fully let go yet.
  • The opener arm visibly jumps or shudders during the first few feet of travel. The opener is fighting misalignment caused by a broken or bent mounting bracket. Every cycle makes the crack worse.
  • You can see daylight through a crack in the bracket or hinge. This is the point where you should stop using the opener. A crack that’s visible means the weld has already failed and the remaining metal is taking the entire load.
  • The gate swings fine manually but the opener stalls or reverses. The opener’s force settings are reading resistance that shouldn’t be there. Nine times out of ten, the resistance is a deteriorating weld or mount, not the motor.

If you spot any of these, call us before the gate gets worse. A caught-early bracket repair is a small job. A gate that’s fallen off its post is a different conversation entirely.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Beverly Hills homeowners, expect these installed ranges for Mighty Mule-related welding and fabrication work:

  • Re-weld a cracked bracket or hinge in place: $180 to $280
  • Fabricate and install a custom post bracket: $250 to $400
  • Rebuild or reinforce a hinge post: $300 to $450
  • Full gate frame reinforcement and re-hang: $450 and up, quoted on site

Every price covers the labor, the steel, the welding rod or wire, and a fresh coat of primer and paint on the welded area so it doesn’t rust through next season. We quote the full price before we touch anything, and that’s the price you pay. No trip charge inside the county, and we honor a $40 discount on any repair over $200. On top of that, every job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not right, we come back and make it right.

What drives the range is mostly access and post condition. A freestanding single gate with a clean work area is quick. A gate set into a stone column or buried in mature hedges takes longer, and if the post itself is rotted or cracked, we have to address that before welding anything onto it.

DIY or Call Us?

Welding on a gate is not a weekend project for most people, and I’ll be straight about why. You’re working with high heat, heavy steel, and a gate that can shift while you’re under it. If the gate falls, it’s hundreds of pounds coming down on whatever’s in the way. That’s not a scare tactic; it’s the reason we carry proper stands and braces on the truck and never trust a gate to stay put on its own.

What you can safely do is check the obvious: tighten any bolts you can reach with a wrench, look for visible cracks in the brackets and hinges, and note where the gate catches or drags. That information helps us quote faster. But leave the cutting, grinding, and welding to someone with the equipment and training. Hal Gatewood put in his hours at the Santa Monica College welding and fabrication program before he ever touched a customer’s gate, and he’s been doing it in Beverly Hills ever since. Call (559) 844-6989 and tell us what the gate is doing. We’ll tell you what it needs.
